Ruin (noun) a fallen, wrecked or decayed condition

by Gavin Hookway and Nicki MacRae

‘There is certainly a beauty in decay - but the true beauty, when you stop and take the time to look, is hidden deep within the detail’

The exhibition, which took almost 18 months to create, spans 5000 years of history - from standing stones and brochs, to recently abandoned homes, cars, and agricultural buildings still in use today - and took the artists to Mull, Lewis, Orkney, as well as all around the Highlands in search of enigmatic subject matter.

Originally intended as an interesting way to hang Gavin’s photographs and Nicki’s paintings side by side with a shared theme, ‘Ruin’ has brought the artists into close collaboration, each being influenced and inspired by each others creations to new ways of working.

The exhibition focuses on texture, colour and contrasts of light to blend perceptions of beauty with the ghosts of past lives, and impressions of that slow, inevitable reclamation by nature that ultimately reminds us of our own fragile human condition.

The exhibition runs from 1st – 30th September.
